Announcing a New Chapter
The Department of Community and Therapeutic Recreation is now the Department of Sport Management & Recreational Therapy. The new name reflects the evolution of the department while adapting to meet emerging societal needs. Our core philosophy remains the same: Enhancing quality of life, promoting health and well-being, and fostering inclusive, meaningful experiences across diverse populations. UNCG has prepared students for impactful careers in recreation, therapy, and community engagement since 1947.
The addition of Sport Management reflects a commitment to prepare students for careers in a growing industry, providing students with direct pathways into careers in gameday operations, fan engagement, facility management, and event planning, all grounded in the principles of recreation leadership and programming.
Recreational Therapy will continue to build upon its strong legacy of preparing certified and licensed professionals who use evidence-based practices to improve health outcomes and support individuals in clinical and community settings.
This change represents continuity and growth, a renewed vision that embraces emerging opportunities while preserving the department’s deep commitment to service, student success, and community impact. We are grateful for the continued support of our students, alumni, faculty, the University, and friends.
